Must-Avoid Chemicals found in Beauty Products when Pregnant

As much as we want to stay beautiful while pregnant, it is better to stay away (for now) from chemicals that can be found in beauty products. Here are some of themthat are said to be harmful to you and to the unborn baby.

Phthalates– also known as dibutyl phthalate (DBP), diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). Usually found in nail/cuticle treatment, lipstick, fragrance and anti-aging products. They are actually plasticizers that add texture and luster to cosmetics, make the nail polish chip-resistant and fragrances to last longer or absorb into the skin better.

Parabens – also known as sodium methylparaben, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben that are found in moisturizer, shampoo, conditioner, anti-aging products, sunscreen, toner/astringent and makeup. This chemical is used as preservatives to protect the beauty products from bacterial growth.

Toluene – also known as methylbenzene and are found in nail products. Toluene is an industrial solvent that can dissolve chemical substances that makes the application of nail polish smooth and stick to the nails.

Formaldehyde– is usually found in nail-strengthening and cuticle treatments, hair color/bleaching, styling gel/lotion. It is actually a preservative, disinfectant and hardener in cosmetic products.

P-phenylenediamine– also known as PPD, PPDA is a hair colorant found in hair color/bleaching, hairspray, shampoo and conditioner.

Oxybenzone – or benzophenone– is a chemical that absorbs ultraviolet light and are found in usually sunscreen products.

Lastly Fragrances – also known as perfume, parfum, cologne, scent and can be found almost in every beauty products from moisturizer, perfume, deodorant, lipstick to makeup. Fragrance is used in a product to make the smell appealing, hiding the unfriendly odors of chemicals used in the product.

Check out also if the product you are using contains lead acetate, methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and selenium, these are rare chemicals used in the beauty products nowadays but there’s no harm in checking them out too.

Switch to an all-natural and organic beauty products. But still don't be fooled by these words just because it says "all-natural" and "organic" doesn't mean it is safe to use during pregnancy. It is still best to read the label, research and ask your doctor. After all we are talking about our health and the health of the unborn child which are the most important. And always remember these words “better safe than sorry”.

Have a Nice Day!

Must-Eat Foods while Pregnant

After reading and posting some of the foods that should be avoided while pregnant, this time here’s some of the foods that I came across the internet that are good for mom to be and the developing baby;

Whole Grains – Do you know that whole-grain breads and cereals have more fiber that white rice and white bread? True! Aside from that whole grains are also fortified with folic acid and iron.

At this point in time, it’s better to include oatmeal, whole grain bread, or brown rice in you daily diet.

Beans – Whether they are black beans, white beans, lentils, garbanzo or soy beans, include them in you daily meal too because they are great source protein, fiber, iron folate, calcium and zinc.

Eggs – Eggs contains a lot of vitamins and minerals including choline which is said to be good for baby’s brain development. Aside from that, eggs are very good source of protein and amino acids that you and your baby need.

But please take note that eggs should not be consumed raw or undercooked.

Low-Fat Yogurts – Accordingly, low-fat yogurts contain more calcium than milk, and it is high in protein that your body needed.

The foods listed above are readily available in the supermarket. There still a lot of foods that pregnant women should eat, so it is better to read and educate ourselves accordingly.

Have a Nice Day Everyone!

Some Foods to Avoid While Pregnant

Prenatal vitamins + well balance food diet are very important during pregnancy, because the nutrients you get from them will help in developing the baby inside you. Pregnant women should eat about 300 calories more than the usual ( gosh I eat more than that!)

And there are also foods that pregnant women should avoid, these are;

Raw Meat and Seafood – Uncooked or undercooked meat whether it’s fish, pork or chicken should be avoided. Because these type of food have high risk of contamination with bacteria, toxoplasmosis and salmonella. Oyster and clams should also be avoided.

At this point in time let's say NO to sushi and undercooked steaks.

Fish with Mercury – Some fish like shark, swordfish and king mackerel contain high level of mercury. These fishes should be avoided because mercury consumed during pregnancy period may cause child developmental delays and brain damage.

Raw Eggs –Like raw meat, raw eggs should also be avoided because of potential exposure to salmonella. Also take caution when consuming salad dressings, mayonnaise or homemade ice cream because they may be made with raw eggs.

Alcohol – It is said that exposure to alcohol during pregnancy may cause to premature delivery, mental retardation, birth defects and low birth weight babies. So, if you are an alcohol drinker, it’s time for you to stop the moment you learn you are pregnant.

Caffeine – Caffeine should only be taken in moderation during pregnancy but should be avoided during the first trimester, because accordingly caffeine might increase the risk of miscarriage.

There are still a lot of foods that are not good while pregnant, so it's better to knowabout them more and avoid them as much as possible.
